Ocean Reid - Born in Leeds, transient ever since, currently living in Hove (for now). Ocean describes most of his life and collective experiences as journeys. His early journey saw him living with family on a small holding, where he and family picked fruit as they set out to be self sufficient. His influences came from his parental record collection, such as Credence Clearwater Revival, The Band, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and Joan Baez. Other influences came from his father playing Beatles and Stones on the Piano as the family came together for meal times.

School was not a place enjoyed by Ocean. He moved schools rather frequently and often found himself to be outside the pack. The transition between city and country schools meant that fitting in was hard, but later he started to enjoy not fitting in. This gave license to push further out as an individual, the harder he was pushed the easier it became. His vocal interjections and points of view were not particularly encouraged or received well by teaching staff at his new schools and also fellow pupils. At his last school music was removed from the curriculum due to low interest amongst pupils, which left him with Art and English as his tort conveyance mediums. This at least gave some small opportunity to use imagination and colour which was very sadly lacking from the school environment. Ocean left school as soon as legally possible; he felt it stifled growth and expression.

As Ocean grew up, he collected his experiences from his journeys and as a rather insular youth he started to compose poetry and eventually songs. Ocean says that “writing his first poetry was like seeing for the first time and trying to capture the moment in words. This was both a revelation and an insurmountable frustration. It was only when my first songs came together I found I could truly speak a language that described the emotions attached to my journey. As it was often the space between the words that made the most sense. These were the moments that took me back to the feelings I felt on the journeys. Pretty much a language of moments.”

Having left school, Ocean spent time in York where he experimented as a musician and started to learn his craft. He had bits and bats of home made instruments and a very cheap guitar, these did not serve him well. Ocean says “it was only when my parents bought me an acoustic guitar for my birthday that I really felt like I bonded with an instrument and really found my voice. Everything just started to come together from there. My songs now flow and I have been learning ever since, my songs grow as my journeys expand and I’m still excited about all the noises that I can make.”

“Some songs describe earth shattering moments of loss in my life and some songs describe the best moments that I’ve ever had.”

“And I want to share them all.”

Ocean is now forging ahead with his solo project drawing comparisons comprising from Credence Clearwater Revival, Joni Mitchel, Thom York, The Band to Van Morrison. Ocean has truly carved out his own style of song writing, described as, “True Sonic Segments of Life”, “Gems from the tortured heart of a Northern Soul” and the track ‘Take a Deep Breath’ described by the BBC as “Literally Breath Taking”.
