Q: Where did you grow up?
A: As a kid I lived on the out-skirts of Leeds (North, UK). When I was about nine we moved to a small holding near York. From there I've kinda moved all over the place.
Q: When did you start to learn about music?
A: I didn't really do music lessons. I tried to learn everything myself, although I probably should get music lessons, as I'm sure I have large gaps in my musical knowledge. I guess I'm worried about corrupting the naive way that I make music. Although I've picked up lots really, but I'm refusing to admit it to myself.
Q: What was the first song you learned?
A: I never really learned to play any other people's songs. It always felt wrong to play them. I always wanted to play my own. I would say my early songs sounded like bad poetry with random noises in the background. I took an interest in music when we moved out of town, I started taking things to bits and seeing what noises I could make out of them. That kinda really pissed my parents off, but I guess I was bored. I didn't really acquire any instruments to play music on until I had the misfortune of doing an YTS in York. I saved up and bought a really messed up guitar, at that point I probably played some Nirvana songs, just cause I loved their energy and I had this really shrill distortion peddle that I bought for a tenner. It broke after about a week, so then I just tried to learn guitar from a really bad chord book I found. That's when I started to write songs with really badly formed chords, no change really. Eventually I got my hands on an acoustic guitar and that is when I kinda really started to understand guitar, at this point my songs started to improve, as I could better mirror what I could hear in my head.
